Celebrate Cheeseburger Month in Style

22 May

America is a country widely recognized for its’ abundant amount of outrageous  achievements.

Some include: comedy classic Norbit, Hot Dog Eating Champion Joey Chestnut , iPhone chatty Siri  and the invention of the cheeseburger.

Charles Kaelin claims to have invented the cheese-topped burger in 1934 but, nothing’s set in stone about the birth.  Now,  because it is after all-National Cheeseburger Month I thought I would share with you my favorite juicy, flavorful burger.

I just happened to stumble upon this scrumptious sandwich at Brickell’s most memorable spot, The Conrad hotel.  After crossing through the luscious lobby landscape, I rode the elevator to the 25th floor only for one of their signature cocktails.  However, once I sat down at the modernistic bar catching a glimpse of the sunset, my stomach was growling for something from their restaurant Atrio.

Something had to change.

Maureen and her Bloody Mary concoction

Maureen and her Bloody Mary concoction

But, first thing’s first; The Bloody Mary I tasted at the hotel’s bar LvL 25 was hands down the best Bloody Mary I’ve ever had.  Trust me, I’ve drank plenty of Bloody Mary’s in my lifetime, some grotesque, others grand.  This one is very different from your overly spiced, dark red thick glass of chunk.  Instead of using America’s favorite mixer Zing Zang, they actually craft my hangover remedy from scratch.  The bartender Maureen smashes basil and crushed cherry tomatoes together followed with some Jalapeno vodka for an extra kick.   Using basil adds such a refreshing hint and counter acts the lightly salted rim.

Once I finished my drink, I was greeted at Atrio and followed the kitchen aroma into the welcoming, romantic, dinning room.  I love their decor, it’s themed with different shades of red giving it the right amount of sex appeal.  It just screams date night. In addition to the restaurant is also a wine room where small parties can take advantage of the intimate setting.  A party of 10 people maximum can wine and dine.   I sat at a table by the window so I could finish admiring Brickell’s daylight.

Pork Belly Starter

Pork Belly Starter

photo (7)My waiter Vishal was incredibly personable and lovely to chat up.  He was very knowledgeable about the menu and explained his recommendations.  I knew it was cheeseburger month and I was honestly, really craving one so I decided to celebrate.  I even splurged and ordered the must-try pork belly appetizer. Since, I was eating red meat  I obviously had to compliment my palate with some red vino.

Their house Pinot Noir had a tremendous amount of depth and a fabulous note of boldness.  It paired perfectly with the pork belly that arrived shortly to my table.  The piggy’s tummy was elegantly portioned and served crispy with a carbonara sauce and a soft poached egg.  It never fails, every time I cut through a poached egg, I always get excited watching the yolk ooze out.  I get happier than Amanda Bynes when she gets a twit pic like. My smile practically extended to the eastern end of China.  The overall combination of the yolk, belly and creamy sauce made a strong impression.  I was excited for more!

Celebrating BIG

Celebrating in Style

As a giant cheeseburger was properly placed my eyes widened with an eagerness to eat. I sliced through the toasted bun, smoked bacon, portobello sharp cheddar, sweet pickle and Angus beef.  I took an embarrassingly, large bite and loved every second of it.   The smoked bacon ensured that I ate enough fat for a very long time.  There’s nothing worse than a raw or overly cooked burger.  Chef Johnathon Campo has his science down, my meat was perfectly pink inside.  I tried not to eat it all but, I kind of did. I’ll inform you that I have no regrets.  Oh, and the side of fries it came with? It tasted like crispy, golden heaven. Opps, they disappeared too.  Next time, I visit I want to try the yuca fries!

Doughnut Bread Pudding

Doughnut Bread Pudding

Somehow… just somehow, I managed to find a way to eat dessert.  After all, I was in a very “hormonal” state. NO dad…nothing’s cooking in my stomach.  I mean, it’s not like I could say no to doughnut, bread pudding.  That would be classified as an illegal foodie move.  Just as I expected, it tasted as good as it sounded.  It was like the more I ate, the better it tasted. The cooling ice cream was thoughtful with the warm, cinnamon fluffy doughnut pudding. It truly was the perfect ending.

Do yourselves a favor and celebrate the rest of National Burger Month at Atrio in the Conrad Hotel for much more than a burger.

Thank you America for your delicious, ridiculous inventions.

No wonder we’re all fat.

What every Wino Wants & More

21 May

Attention South Florida, I have phenomenal news.

This news could potentially change your life.

Well, maybe not change your life but, it COULD make your life better.  Especially, if you have recently suffered from a breakup, fight, or an occasional Miami fender bender.

Obviously, I’m talking about Total Wine & More‘s new location.  Image

Who doesn’t love wine and (America’s favorite word) more?

Total Wine & More is debuting in Kendall at The Palms Town & Country Shopping Center this Thursday, May 23rd at 9:00 AM.  The same day at 6:00 PM they’re hosting a ribbon-cutting celebration with wine tastings, live entertainment and of course, more!  Skip your usual happy hour and check out Total Wine & More to really get a taste.  If it makes you feel better, the new location is giving a charitable donation of $10,000 to Kendall area non-profit Read2Succeed (www.r2succeed) as a show of its commitment to the community it serves.  During their grand opening, you can drink and tap into your philanthropic side all at the same time.  Double win!

The new Kendall store is approximately 23,000 square feet with a selection over 8,000 wines, 3,000 spirits and 2,500 beers.  It sounds like Mel Gibson’s version of heaven.

Now, where else will can you find THAT much of a variety?   I’m getting thirsty just thinking about it. If you thought such a place couldn’t get better, think again.  It even features a state-of-the-art education center with desktop computers and Wi-Fi, to be used for wine, beer and spirits classes as well as for private tastings, meetings and special events.  I could definitely score an A in that class.

When I’m cooking for a party, I always try to create a wine pairing for guests to create a memorable evening. One of the main reasons I love this Kendall location is because, it’s a tech-savvy drinker’s dream. Throughout the store are iPads with software that tells you which wines pair well with meals.  Customers can also scan QR codes for more information on their favorite types of alcohol.

Something new I learned about Total Wines & More that makes me appreciate this company is their reputation for knowledgeable staff.  And let’s be real, the service in Florida needs a serious makeover. Each member must participate in a 100+ hour training program.  That sounds even longer than my entire college career.

This Kendall spot marks Florida’s 21st Total Wine & More store.  Hopefully, their next area of attack is Coconut Grove… preferably, adjacent to my apartment building.  Actually, that could become a potentially dangerous problem for not only my health but, also my piggy bank.

If you’re trying to get your drink on-Total Wines & More in Kendall is the only option for everything and anything you might need.

Location: The Palms Town & Country Shopping Center, 11960 Mills Drive, Kendall

Grand Opening: Thursday, May 23rd

Ages: 21 and up, sorry Justin Bieber

May 21: DISHCRAWL (My Pick) dishcraawl

Bar-crawls are always a great excuse to get your drink on.  So just imagine how much fun a Dishcrawl would be!  It’s like a bar crawl for foodaholics, otherwise known as a bar crawl on crack.  I haven’t even mentioned the fun part yet.  You don’t even know where you’re eating!  The first Miami Dishcrawl took place last month in the financial district and obviously was a  great success.  They went to The Edge, The Hoxton, OTC and Vapiano.  Not too shabby huh?

AtrioRestaurant Alt

Atrio’s Dining Room

All you know is that you’re going to 4 local restaurants for different meals specially prepared by the chef. It’s a great way to preview establishments and get a feel for the food.    Each ticket is only $45, except that doesn’t include booze.  But, hey these places have to make money somehow.   I have a special sneak peak for you too! It’s confirmed that the first dinning spot is at The luxurious Conrad Hotel at their restaurant and wine room Atrio.  If that’s only the beginning just imagine where else you can end up!

For more info. read here and if you have any more questions the Miami Dishcrawl Ambassador Vicky is awesome.

May 24-May 26: MY HAPPY HOUR PICK

Do you love The River Oyster Bar as much as mwa?  Check out Chef David Bracha’s latest and greatest Oak Tavern.  Happy hour is EVERY damn day from 4:30-7, beat that.  If you haven’t guessed already their menu features iced oysters for under $3 a pop.  The dining style is similar to MGFD with smaller to larger plates.  Any Chacuterie lover should definitely check out their specialties.

Well, that was a mouthful.  Speaking of which, I’m quite thirsty for 3 drinks and 3 ceviche spoons at Jaguar. Thanks!

Cheers!

My Foodie Mama’s Morning Picks

8 May

It’s finally that time of the year againmy birthday!! Oh right.. of course, that ALSO means mummy day.

Once a year, when I celebrate the day of my monumental entering into this world, it falls around mother’s day. Sometimes I’m even forced to share my special 24 hours with my mother. After 22 years, I’m pretty used to it. At least now that I’m 21, I can serve as an awesome and admirable drinking partner. How sweet am I? I mean it’s not that bad spending some of the spotlight with dearest Carey, especially if she’s going halfsies on some Veuve Clicquot. Champagne for my campaign ya’ll.

Let’s not kid ourselves, Mother’s Day is a pretty sweet time. All you need to do is bring some flowers, scratch a sentence or 2 on a card, say I love you and her face lights up as much as Perez Hilton did last night when he spotted Kim Kardahian wearing a couch. Side note: According to Vanity Fair 89% of people voted Mrs. Doubtfire hotter than K. Dash. Poor Kim, I really am a fan.

Anyhow, I didn’t even mention the best part of Mother’s Day….BRUNCH! My mom and I love ourselves some brunch. Question is, where to go? This questionnaire may help you pick the perfect place.

  • Does she like to Manga? Head over to Spartico at Coconut Grove’s luxurious Mayfair Hotel & Spa. She can dive into a buffet with her favorite pastimes like Italian imported cold cuts, Prosciutto Baked Egg Cups or snack on pizza made from their Ambrogi wood-burning oven. For an extra $12 drink up with unlimited mimosas. Mom’s are also greeted by a complimentary welcome drink. Prices start at $28.95, read here for more info.
  • Is she indecisive? Sugarcane features an excellent brunch with a giant array of options full of something for everyone. You can sit outside and bring the dogs too! What else would you expect from a restaurant with 3 different kitchens? They’re offering everything imaginable from duck and waffles to sushi and king crab legs. If you’re ordering from their robata grill, I suggest the octopus and pork belly. Check out their full menu here.
  • Was she a wild child, or still is? Take her to the design district for a morning at Michael’s Genuine. James Beard Award Winning Chef, Michael Schwartz isn’t messing around during brunch. They start their days crazy with plates like their spin on eggs Benedict served with crispy pork belly and kimchi hollandaise. Save room for dessert from James Beard finalist, Hedy Goldsmith! Her sensational treats include homemade pop-tarts and candy bar pie. For pricing and details go here. Make reservations quick, this hot spot fills up fast!
  • Calling ALL WINOS- Go gourmet at Atrio Restaurant and Wine Room at The Conrad Miami for a stellar sunny view. Brunch highlights include a carving station featuring Roast Angus Beef Strip Loin and Spiced Honey Roasted Ham with Mango Salsa or celebrate with Charcuterie. Bringing the kids? Don’t stress for a second because, children can have just as much fun in their arts & crafts kids zone-Sorry moms aren’t allowed. For reservations call 305-503-6529, $75 for adults and $24 per niño.
  • You fancy huh? Visit Brickell’s towering 4 Seasons Hotel and prepare for foodie heaven at The Edge. “Moodies” (mom foodies) can really start partying with unlimited Mimosas, Mojitos and Bloody Mary’s. Winner of Miami’s Cochon 555, Chef Aaron Brooks is showcasing a crispy roast suckling pig, made to order ceviche, fresh oysters, smoked duck breast and MORE. If that didn’t grab your attention, pastry chef Sarah Thompson will really give you a sugar high with sweet doughnuts prepared with homemade Nutella and strawberry marshmallows. Make reservations at (305) 381-3190. Brunch costs $95 for adults and $32 for children (hello, unlimited drinks).

Now that I’m officially sitting at my desk drooling I hope you have a banging brunch. Reservations are highly recommended for anywhere, so hurry!

Cheers to the greatest mum ever, Carey Guerra!

On Sunday, I will drink many mimosas at The Edge in her honor. (Yup, that’s my pick ;) )

Get Serenaded at Spartico

7 May

Everyone has their own escape. Whether it’s going to the beach, your favorite dive or even watching a horrendously entertaining episode from The Real housewives of Miami, it’s there for you when you need it.

mayfair steps

On Thursday nights, I like to slip into Spartico at The Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove. More recently, Mayfair’s rustic restaurant has transformed Thursday evenings into something much more than just dinner.

My first encounter at Spartico occurred as Joey and I were walking home from dinner. As we were approaching The Mayfair I stopped in the middle of the street with dead confusion. I heard a voice singing Frank Sinatra but, it sounded too good to be true. Immediately, after realizing I was standing in the road, I followed my ears into Spartico where I spotted a very living and quite pleasing to the eyes, Louis Amanti.

Growing up, my father was a huge admirer of the Rat Pack and constantly blasted Frank, Dean and now, Michael Buble. You’re all lucky you didn’t have to hear my dad sing along as well. Those old classics always take me back to my childhood and I’ve even become a huge fan. Now, my dad is thrilled and beyond thankful he doesn’t have to listen to Taylor Swift when I’m around.

Amanti’s voice is a close replica to the serenading Sinatra. I pleaded with my boyfriend that we have a drink at the bar to listen -If I knew how captivated I became I would have opted for a bottlehe is that good. There was another couple sitting beside us who else were drawn inside by his astounding voice. It was so refreshing to hear a live performer in Coconut Grove by someone who is actually talented.

Bellini

Bellini

In addition to watching Louis Amanti belt out the classics on Thursday nights, you can indulge in Spartico’s homemade pastas for only $10.99 and sip on Bellini’s and Americano’s for $9.00. There are also wine specials for you winos. Last week, I had the privilege of experiencing a full evening for their dinner show.

If you haven’t been to The Mayfair before, definitely use their restaurant as an excuse to peek around the exotic boutique hotel. Also, note to self: you need to get out more. Spartico is trattoria inspired with an Italian menu full of pasta dishes and pizzas from their Milan imported wood-burning Ambrogi oven. You have the option of either sitting at the bar, inside their dinning room or outside overlooking the courtyard. There is also front row seats at the pizza bar where you can watch some oven’ loven’. If you’re here on a Thursday I suggest sitting inside their dimly lit romantic set up, and you’ll get a better seat closer to Louis Amanti. Ladies, you will thank you me later.

Dessert Heaven

Torta De La Nonna

Jorge was our waiter, and he was extremely attentive. By attentive, I also mean my drink was never empty….I call that excellent service. Since, I dined here on a Thursday It was only appropriate I have a Bellini or 3 which were incredibly refreshing. It reminded me of my dreamier times in Rome. Spartico recently hired a new chef, Dario Correa who utilizes his simplistic food philosophy by using local and fresh ingredients. In the past, he has worked under celebrity chef and culinary genius (my crush) Eric Ripert of New York’s Le Bernadin. Since, his time at Spartico they have introduced weekly specials and he added a fabulous cheesecake like dessert with ricotta that’s drizzled in honey. It’s my latest obsession.  Remember these words: Torta De La Nonna.

Calamari

Calamari

Here’s what else I love:

  • Calamari: I’m a calamari snob. I hate ordering this at most Italian restaurants because, they over fry it or it’s utterly bland. Not here, the squid was lightly fried and the accompanied aioli and slightly spicy marinara were extremely complimentary. This is a great starter and definite crowd-pleaser.
  • La Famigla Pizza: I’m from New York and I’m not lying when I saying I love their pizza. It’s cooked exactly to my liking, it’s not burnt but, perfectly thin and crispy. The La Famigla features local mozzarella, grana parmasean, California figs and prosciutto finished with organic honey. If you love figs as much as me, this is a hit. I love the sweet and savory combination.
  • Speck & Mushroom Pizza: This is my second favorite pizza from here. It’s almost like the one above except, not as sweet. It highlights shitake and porcini mushrooms and topped with Italian dry cured ham. Mushroom lovers beware!

    Gnocchi w/ wild mushrooms

    Gnocchi w/ wild mushrooms

  • Gnocchi with Wild Mushrooms: Gnocchi is one of my favorite pastas, and not many places make it from scratch. Their homemade pasta is served with a light cream sauce, and an assortment of porcini, wild and shitake mushrooms. Another reason why I’m a fan is because, it wouldn’t be complete without some truffle oil.
  • Pulled Lamb Shank Rigatoni

    Pulled Lamb Shank Rigatoni

Lamb Shank Rigatoni: My boyfriend orders this almost every time, it’s extremely flavorful and hearty. The pulled lamb shank is so tender and juicy and pairs extremely well with the aged goat cheese, fresh tomatoes and oregano… Come hungry.

  • Chocolate Gelato: No joke, Joey and I came back the next night for this! He wouldn’t stop talking about it. If you like chocolate and chocolate shavings in your ice cream, you need to eat this. Yes, if you’re wondering I ordered the cheesecake too. Weekend calories don’t count…right?

    Chocaholics Dream

    Chocaholics Dream

During my visit, I tried the Aragosta Thermidor. This translates to 1 and 1/4 lb. of Maine lobster stuffed with organic spinach and then coated with a Béchamel sauce and browned with imported Grana Padano cheese. It tasted as delicious as it sounded. Amanti’s favorite dish is Spaghetti Bolognese which I look forward to trying next time.

Everything was sensational that evening, from the service to the food all while sinking into my seat listening to the soothing music surrounded by the serene setting. Once again, I did not want to leave. No offense to Miami, but sometimes this town is a bit too crowded, loud and crazy. I have an enormous amount of appreciation for places like Spartico where I can revisit my Italian roots and relax. Thursday’s are fantastic for an unforgettable evening full of romance.

Escape to Spartico to experience a better evening.

Location: Mayfair Hotel & Spa at 3000 Florida Avenue, in the Grove

Thursday’s: Louis Amanti sings from 7-11PM

Happy Hour: Every day 4-7 PM with drink and bar bites specials

Attire: Dress to impress

Drink up Pretty in Pink

1 May

It’s official.  I thought I would never say the day but, I love GIN.

My gin & tonic loving grandfather would be proud…I think…

Recently, I have been experimenting new refreshing spins on the standard gimlet.

My “experiments” have also served a greater purpose in giving me a better excuse to drink.  I just love tapping into my creative side.

The other day while I was “researching”  at the liquor store.  I searched among many cordials and college memories full of crap like Franzia, Natty Light and Whipped Cream Vodka (the mere thought makes me want to vom).  Shortly, I diverted into the liquor section where I stared stupidly for much too long.  I wanted to find something fruity to mix with my cheap handle of gin.  But what?

After I picked the salesman’s little brain about his useless knowledge of sweet, girly, fruity liquors, I  grabbed Thatcher’s Yumberry liqueur.  Fine, I’ll admit the name Yumberry sold me.   Did I mention it’s organic too? I still think that whole movement is bogus, but maybe it appeals to you.

This recipe is really refreshing during the heat and is pretty light.   Make it for your girlfriends during a weekend brunch or your greatest gay guy friends.  It’s pink after all.

*Making In advance*

I cut up half of a cucumber into slices and placed them into a jar full of gin so it infused giving it a stronger cucumber taste.  Beware the cucumbers- after a couple of bites you might be more than buzzed.  Also, I like to add basil into the mix too for a “herby” taste.

Ingredients:  For 1 drink

(Double if you heart was recently broken)

2 slices of cucumber

A few blackberries

1-2 shots of Gin (depending on how thirsty you are)

4 oz. of Yumberry

4 oz. Diet Tonic Water

Some sprigs of rosemary, mint or whatever ya’ feeling

Directions:

  1. Snap the cucumber slices with the blackberries and muddle them into your glass with either the rosemary, mint or whatever plant you got close…not that kind of plant people…
  2. Add in all the liquids, throw in some ice cubes and some kind of leaf to make it look like your cocktail is growing.
  3. Drink it and live it up.

If you are K. Dash or driving I wouldn’t suggest drinking this considering it could put a damper on your day.

I used pears instead of blackberries

I used pears instead of blackberries

If you’re not Cheers!  Happy almost summer!

Wine Tasting

25 Apr

Happy Hour= are my 2 favorite words

Lately, my piggy bank would not agree.

Pink Piggy Bank

Recently, I’ve been hitting up happy hours in hopes that I actually save money. However, it hasn’t been the case.  These bars love to lure drinkers in with their so called “deals” but, I don’t think a $9 drink is a deal.  Or I love when these places advertise half-off drinks but, when you get your bill you find out it’s not for premium drinks.  So, therefore you only get half off of booze as bad as Skol.  tl-horizontal_main

I’m not trying to get into keg-stands.  Let’s just say, I drank a lot of Skol in school and those days are over.

I’ve come to the realization that I should start making my own happy hour…at my house.   Luckily, tonight Vinos in the Grove is having a FREE WINE TASTING.  There is a god.  It’s the weekend….almost…. so, why not start early? Your piggy bank will be in a much better mood.

It’s from 6-8 PM at 3409 Main Hwy in the heart of Cokynut Grove :) Vino’s is featuring Groth Wines from Napa Valley.

If you haven’t been to this gem of a spot, this is a great opportunity to try it out.  The atmosphere has a bohemian feel and the servers are always sincere.  After a few glasses you might want to take advantage of their savory cheese plates or my favorite….caviar.

To read more about Vinos in The Grove check out my earlier post.

Hope to see you tonight! We can’t forget about local businesses.
